Toddler Becomes Tamil Nadu's Youngest Organ Donor at Chennai's RGGGH

A baby boy aged one year and seven months became Tamil Nadu’s youngest deceased organ donor after his parents consented to donate his organs at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) in Chennai, giving a new lease of life to an adult and two toddlers on Monday.

According to an official release from Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, the child had been undergoing medical care in the intensive care unit for six days for hydrocephalus, a condition characterized by the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain.

Despite medical interventions, the child's health did not improve. Dr R Raghavendran, director of the Institute of Neurosurgery at RGGGH, stated that the child suffered irreversible brain damage and was declared brain dead on Sunday.

Following the family's consent, the child's vital organs were retrieved to help three different patients. Both kidneys were allocated and transplanted into a woman in her twenties admitted to a private hospital in Chennai. Medical teams noted that the kidney transplant was viable because the recipient weighed under 40 kg.

The donor's liver was transplanted into an ailing toddler undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Chennai. Meanwhile, the child's heart was transported to a private healthcare facility in Coimbatore for another toddler requiring a transplant, sources confirmed.

Hospital authorities noted that the state's previous youngest deceased organ donor had also been treated at RGGGH, an infant aged one year and eight months.
