TNSTC to Run 1,900 Special Buses for Independence Day Weekend Rush

The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporations (TNSTCs) will operate 1,900 additional special buses across the state to manage the expected surge in passenger traffic over the Independence Day weekend from August 14 to 16. In Chennai, operations will be centered around major bus hubs including the Kilambakkam, Koyambedu, and Madhavaram bus termini, carrying passengers from the city to various districts and neighboring destinations.

The special services have been planned as August 15 falls on a Saturday and is observed as Independence Day. Transport officials anticipate that a large number of passengers will be traveling from Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu to their native places over the three-day weekend.

The Kilambakkam bus terminus in Chennai will handle the largest share of the special departures from the city. A total of 505 special buses will be operated from Kilambakkam on August 14, followed by another 570 special buses on August 15. These buses will cover major destinations including Tiruvannamalai, Tiruchy, Kumbakonam, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi, Coimbatore, Salem, Erode, and Tiruppur.

From the Koyambedu terminus, transport authorities will operate 110 special buses each day on August 14 and August 15. Destinations served from Koyambedu include Thiruvannamalai, Nagapattinam, Velankanni, Hosur, and Bengaluru. At the Madhavaram bus terminus, 80 special buses will be operated on August 14 and another 80 on August 15 to assist travellers heading out of the city.

Outside Chennai, a total of 200 special buses will be operated across the three days from key industrial and urban centers, namely Bengaluru, Tirupur, Erode, and Coimbatore, to various places across the state.

To accommodate returning travellers at the end of the holiday period, TNSTC has planned return services heading back to the state capital. A total of 465 buses will be operated on Sunday to Chennai from various places across Tamil Nadu to clear the returning passenger rush.
