TNRERA Chairman Shiv Das Meena and Two Members Resign in Chennai

Shiv Das Meena, the chairman of the Tamil Nadu Real Estate Regulatory Authority (TNRERA), has resigned from his post in Chennai along with two authority members, Subramaniam and Sukumar. The sudden vacancies come at a crucial time for the regulatory body, which was established in 2017 to oversee the state's real estate sector.

The departures of Meena, Subramaniam, and Sukumar represent the latest in a series of resignations by senior retired officials from government-appointed posts across Tamil Nadu. Recently, former Director General of Police (DGP) Shankar Jiwal resigned as the chairman of the Tamil Nadu Fire Commission, while former DGP Sunil Kumar stepped down from his post as the chairman of the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board.

Local developers have expressed concern over the empty seats at the regulatory authority. A developer noted that these vacancies have occurred at a critical juncture for TNRERA and urged the state government to fill the positions as quickly as possible.

Under the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016 (RERA), the Tamil Nadu government is responsible for appointing the chairperson and members. TNRERA is structured to consist of one chairperson and up to four whole-time members.

The appointment process requires recommendations from a dedicated selection committee. This committee comprises the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, or a judge nominated by the Chief Justice, the Housing Secretary, and the Law Secretary. The committee evaluates candidates and recommends names to the state government for final appointment.

Once appointed, the TNRERA chairperson and members serve a five-year term or until they reach the prescribed age limit, whichever comes first. The Act also outlines a strict procedure for removal, requiring an inquiry by a judge nominated by the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court in cases of alleged misconduct or incapacity before any action can be taken.
