TNPSC Increases Group I Exam Vacancies to 46 Following Aspirant Concerns

The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) has revised the number of vacancies for its Group I competitive examination, raising the total from 26 to 46 through an addendum published online on Thursday, following complaints from candidates regarding the sharp reduction in posts.

Aspirants preparing for the Group I, Group II, and Group II A competitive examinations had taken to social media across the State to demand an increase in vacancies. The initial notification for the Group I (Combined Civil Services Examination I) had invited applications for only 26 vacancies, marking the lowest figure notified in recent years.

Under the original notification, TNPSC had listed 12 vacancies for the Tamil Nadu Civil Service, two posts for Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Taxes) in the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Service, and three posts for Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies in the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Service. The notification also included eight vacancies for District Registrar in the Tamil Nadu Registration Service and one post for Assistant Commissioner of Labour in the Tamil Nadu Labour Service.

Following candidate appeals, TNPSC Chairman S.K. Prabakar stated that the number of vacancies would increase and be updated through online addenda.

In the addendum released on Thursday, the commission raised the number of Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Taxes) posts from two to 10 and the Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies posts from three to six. The update also added six vacancies for the post of Assistant Director of Rural Development in the Tamil Nadu Panchayat Development Service and three vacancies for District Employment Officer in the Tamil Nadu General Service, taking the total tally to 46.

The initial decrease had prompted widespread reactions from competitive exam candidates who cited historical recruitment numbers. Group I notifications had previously listed 95 vacancies in 2022, 90 in 2024, and 72 in 2025. Similarly, Group II and II A recruitment had announced 6,000 posts in 2022, around 2,000 posts in 2024, and approximately 1,200 posts in 2025, of which 800 were filled.

Candidates noted that expectations were high for a substantial rise in government recruitment after Chief Minister Vijay formed the government, highlighting election campaign statements regarding increased exam vacancies and addressing past exam irregularities. Aspirants pointed out that lower vacancies in Group I had pushed candidates to look at Group II and Group II A exams as alternatives, where announced openings were also perceived as insufficient.
