TNEB partners with IIT Madras to modernize power infrastructure and distribution

On Thursday, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT-Madras to modernize the state's electricity infrastructure, power production, and distribution systems. The partnership, signed at a ceremony where TNEB Chairman J. Radhakrishnan and IIT Head for Industrial Counselling Dr. Manu Santhanam exchanged the agreement, aims to upgrade the utility's operations to meet international standards.
Under the new agreement, a team of academic experts from IIT-Madras will work directly alongside senior TNEB engineers at the TNEB headquarters in Chennai. The collaboration will focus heavily on integrating renewable energy safely, upgrading daily operational quality, and improving the overall efficiency of thermal power plants across the state.
The partnership will also introduce advanced digital technologies into the state's power management. IIT-Madras will assist TNEB in implementing Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, data analytics, and data-driven decision-making. These technologies will be utilized for real-time grid monitoring, establishing centralized data centers, and setting up centralized billing systems.
Commenting on the initiative, Electricity Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar stated that TNEB required dedicated research and development (R&D) and technology support to solve the department's current challenges. He pointed out that TNEB has never had a standalone R&D team in the past, but has now formed a team to work directly with the institute's experts.
The priority areas of the collaboration will include evaluating existing processes and policies, as well as assessing thermal power plant efficiency. The IIT team will also provide advisory support to the electricity board in various areas, including rooftop solar programs, charging stations, and load flow studies.
Additionally, the MoU enables joint efforts in implementing Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and providing specialized skill development and training for TNEB officials. IIT-Madras Director V. Kamakoti expressed confidence that Tamil Nadu is capable of becoming an energy-surplus state with the help of these latest technologies, stating that the institute will work to build a smart, secure, and resilient energy capture and distribution system.
