TN Wind Power Generation Crosses 100 Mu For 36th Time, Sets New Record

Tamil Nadu’s wind power generation crossed the 100 million units (Mu) mark for the 36th time this year on Thursday, setting a new benchmark by surpassing the previous record of 35 times recorded in 2025.

On Thursday, the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (TNPDCL) absorbed 117.65 Mu of wind energy into the power grid. The milestone was reached despite a delayed start to the season, as wind generation picked up only in July, almost a month later than last year.

Despite the late onset, generation accelerated quickly through the monsoon period. In July alone, daily wind power generation breached the 100 Mu mark on 23 separate occasions. The momentum culminated on August 1, when daily generation touched a new all-time high of 142.430 Mu in a single day.

Between April 1 and August 13, the state discom absorbed a total of 8,491 Mu of wind power. July accounted for a significant share of this supply, with 3,401 Mu of wind power evacuated into the grid during the month.

The Renewable Energy Producers Association (REPA) stated that grid absorption in 2026 is on track to be one of the highest on record, supported by a positive wind forecast over the coming week.

REPA chief advisor K Venkatachalam pointed out that favorable weather and sustained grid uptake could yield further milestones. "The wind season started late, in July. If it continues into Sept and if TNPDCL does not curtail generation, we will set new records this year," he said.
