TN Health Directorate Steps Up H1N1 Surveillance Amid Case Surge

Amid a surge in H1N1 cases, the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine has intensified surveillance and strengthened preventive measures across the state, while urging people not to panic.
The health department stated that influenza-like illnesses and severe acute respiratory infections are monitored throughout the year. District health officers and rapid response teams are actively reviewing the situation on the ground and are prepared to take immediate action if any unusual increase in infections or specific disease clusters are detected.
Government hospitals and primary health centres are actively testing and treating patients arriving with fever and respiratory symptoms across Chennai and other districts. Health authorities confirmed that necessary pharmaceutical supplies are being closely tracked.
“Both govt hospitals and primary health centres are testing and treating patients with fever and respiratory symptoms. Stocks of oseltamivir, an antiviral used to treat influenza, and other essential medicines are being monitored,” said Director of Public Health Dr A Somasundaram.
Vulnerable populations are being kept under special watch by medical personnel. These high-risk groups include pregnant women, young children, senior citizens, and people living with co-morbidities such as diabetes, heart disease, and chronic respiratory illnesses. The department noted that patients presenting with severe symptoms may be placed on antiviral therapy upon medical advice without waiting for laboratory test results.
The Directorate has advised individuals experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, or a sore throat to seek medical attention at an early stage. Official health guidelines recommend frequent handwashing, covering the face while coughing or sneezing, getting adequate rest, and consuming sufficient fluids. Health officials also emphasized that the public should avoid self-medicating and must seek a doctor's advice.
