TN Govt Role Crucial for Kulasekarapattinam Spaceport, Says Nambi Narayanan
Former space scientist Nambi Narayanan has emphasized that the Tamil Nadu government must take a proactive role in building common facilities and social infrastructure around the upcoming spaceport at Kulasekarapattinam. Speaking on the strategic value of the project, Narayanan noted that state support is critical to drawing private aerospace companies and skilled talent to the region.
Highlighting the nation's evolving space ecosystem, Narayanan pointed out that the spaceport at Kulasekarapattinam holds strategic importance for India's launch capabilities. He stated that the state government needs to lead initiatives aimed at promoting the location to private industry players involved in satellite launches.
As an example of growing private sector involvement, Narayanan cited the small satellite launcher developed by Indian space startup Skyroot Aerospace. The startup's launch vehicle previously lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota in July. Narayanan noted that such small satellite launch vehicles are probably ideal candidates for future operations out of Kulasekarapattinam, depending on how the commercial market develops over time.
Narayanan also drew attention to the advantages of co-locating associated space activities near the new launch site. He pointed out that the ISRO Propulsion Complex at Mahendragiri in Tirunelveli district is located close to Kulasekarapattinam as the crow flies. Due to this geographical proximity, Narayanan suggested that the launch complex at Kulasekarapattinam could potentially be managed and controlled directly from Mahendragiri, offering significant operational benefits.
In addition to launch control infrastructure, Narayanan outlined further potential developments that could enhance the site's utility. Currently, satellites are assembled and brought to launch complexes from the satellite centre at Bengaluru or other development facilities. Narayanan suggested that if clean rooms of the required satellite class are established near the Kulasekarapattinam launch site, companies may prefer to conduct final satellite assembly locally, even if the initial design work is completed elsewhere.
Narayanan concluded that creating these essential common facilities and supporting social infrastructure is mission critical for Tamil Nadu. By laying down the groundwork, the state government can effectively position Kulasekarapattinam as a primary hub for private space activities and technical innovation in the region.
