TN Govt Issues Work Orders to Joyalukkas, Kalyan Jewellers for Gold Ring Scheme

The Tamil Nadu government has issued work orders to two jewellery firms to procure 1,28,499 gold rings for newborns under the Thaimaman Gold Ring Scheme, officials announced in Chennai. The procurement, managed by the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC), has been awarded to Joyalukkas and Kalyan Jewellers on a 70:30 ratio to cover beneficiaries from June to September.
The initiative, also referred to as the maternal uncle gold ring scheme, was announced by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay in the run-up to the April Assembly election. The program is intended to encourage deliveries in government medical facilities, build public trust in state healthcare services, and celebrate the birth of children born in state-run hospitals.
Under the guidelines of the scheme, children born in government hospitals from June 22, 2026, will be eligible to receive a one-gram gold ring. The formal rollout of the welfare measure is scheduled for September 15, 2026, to coincide with the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister C N Annadurai.
According to an official release, the government order outlines a total requirement of 4,41,667 one-gram gold rings. Following the tender floated by the TNMSC on July 14, 11 companies participated and submitted their price bids through the TN Tenders portal.
During the tender evaluation, Joyalukkas quoted the lowest price of Rs 0.01 excluding the base price of one gram of gold, which includes all additional charges such as processing fees, insurance, transportation, and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) stamping. In accordance with the Tamil Nadu Non-Disclosure Agreement Act and associated regulations, Kalyan Jewellers also submitted a qualifying low price.
To fulfill the requirements for the four-month period spanning June to September, the TNMSC finalised the 70:30 allocation between Joyalukkas and Kalyan Jewellers to deliver the initial tranche of 1,28,499 gold rings across Tamil Nadu.
