TN Extends Free Bus Travel for Differently-abled to Express and Deluxe Buses

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, who also holds the portfolio for Differently-abled Welfare, announced in Chennai on Monday the extension of the free bus travel scheme for differently-abled persons to almost all state-run buses, except air-conditioned services.

Replying to the discussion on demands for grants to the ministry, the Chief Minister stated that the free travel facility, which currently covers ordinary buses and includes a helper, will now be expanded to Express, Low Semi-Deluxe (LSS), and deluxe buses.

In addition to the public transport expansion, the Chief Minister announced that specially designed low-height scooters fitted with retrofit wheels will be distributed to eligible persons. The initiative aims to support differently-abled individuals whose legs are affected but whose hands function properly, enabling them to travel independently for education and employment.

The government also outlined new welfare infrastructure projects across the state. Dedicated homes for the mentally challenged will be established in ten districts, providing care for 500 persons. Another set of homes equipped with occupational training facilities will be opened in ten districts to benefit 400 individuals.

Furthermore, two new residential care homes will be set up specifically for individuals with spinal cord injuries. To support early intervention and development, the government will also establish six primary training centres for differently-abled children.
