TN Begins ₹500-Crore Project to Restore Over 10,000 Water Channels and Tanks

Restoration work on 10,185 supply channels and 809 water bodies across Tamil Nadu commenced on Monday at an estimated cost of ₹500 crore. As part of the statewide launch, renovation works worth ₹3.19 crore were inaugurated for the supply channel of the Puthur village tank in Nedungundram panchayat, located in the Kattankulathur panchayat union of Chengalpet district.

The extensive project is being carried out under the control of the rural development and panchayat raj department. It covers water bodies including lakes, ponds, and ooranis under the ‘Viksit Bharat – gram employment guarantee and livelihood scheme’ (VB-G RAM G).

Minister for Rural Development and Water Resources N. Anand officially inaugurated the renovation works at the Puthur village tank supply channel in Nedungundram. Minister for Human Resources Management T. Sarathkumar and Chengalpet District Collector Dr. M. Veerappan also participated in the event alongside other government officials.

The restoration initiative is being implemented across rural areas of Tamil Nadu with the aim of protecting water bodies, enhancing existing water resources, and securing livelihoods for the farming community.

According to officials, the planned restoration works are designed to play a crucial role in effectively harvesting rainwater. The project aims to increase the holding capacity of local water bodies, raise depleting groundwater levels, and conserve water resources to meet both agricultural requirements and drinking water needs across the state.
