TN Assembly Witnesses Ruckus Over Car Scheme for MLAs

The Tamil Nadu Assembly witnessed heated exchanges on Friday after DMK member Markandeyan raised the issue of providing cars to MLAs to facilitate travel within their constituencies.

The discussion arose during the debate on the grants for the Housing department in Chennai. Law Minister C T R Nirmal Kumar expressed displeasure over the matter being brought up again several days after the initial announcement and urged ruling party members not to stir the issue.

During the debate, Leader of the House K A Sengottaiyan questioned who had spent Rs 24 crore on a car race in Chennai while the State was facing a financial crisis. In response, DMK's K N Nehru stated that the expenditure was incurred during Udhayanidhi's tenure as Sports Minister.

Speaker J C D Prabhakar intervened during the session, urging legislators not to continue raking up the car issue.

Defending the initiative, Minister Arun Raj stated that the car scheme would assist MLAs in better understanding and addressing the problems within their constituencies.
