TN Assembly Speaker Urges MLAs to Maintain Decorum During Proceedings

Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, expressed strong displeasure over the conduct of several MLAs during House proceedings in Chennai. He emphasised that the responsibility of safeguarding the dignity and decorum of the Assembly lies equally with both the ruling party and the Opposition.

Addressing the House, Mr. Prabhakar stated that his primary intention is to conduct the proceedings with dignity and adhere strictly to parliamentary conventions, while ensuring that all legislators receive an adequate opportunity to participate in debates.

However, the Speaker noted that over the preceding two days, certain members had been crossing acceptable limits. He pointed out that legislators, particularly those seated on the back benches on both sides of the House, were frequently leaving their designated seats, raising their hands, and advancing toward the well of the House.

Mr. Prabhakar also expressed deep anguish over the use of inappropriate language by some members during the debates. Reminding the legislators that Assembly proceedings are broadcast live to the public, he urged them to remain mindful of their conduct, noting that citizens across the state are actively watching their behaviour in the House.

Warning members against testing his patience, the Speaker cautioned legislators not to force him into a position where disciplinary measures would become necessary. He stressed that he has no desire to expel anyone from the House and does not wish to be pushed into a situation where he is compelled to take such extreme steps and justify them.

Additionally, the Speaker advised legislators from both sides against engaging in confrontational exchanges purely for the sake of challenging one another while someone is speaking. He noted that members on the ruling side carry an even greater responsibility to ensure that proceedings run smoothly and constructively.
