Ticket Examiner and Lawyer Charged After Scuffle at Egmore Railway Station

A physical altercation between a woman train ticket examiner and a woman lawyer at the Egmore railway station on Saturday, July 4, 2026, resulted in injuries and led to criminal cases being registered against both individuals. The confrontation, which occurred on suburban platforms 10 and 11, caused brief tension among commuters at the busy transit hub in Egmore.

According to a senior official of the Government Railway Police (GRP), the incident involved Salma Begum, a train ticket examiner who was on duty at the station, and Mohana, a lawyer residing in Mangadu.

The dispute began when Salma Begum, who was conducting routine ticket checks on the suburban platforms, approached Mohana as she stood on the platform. The ticket examiner asked Mohana to produce a valid travel ticket. Mohana responded that she did not have a travel ticket because she had only come to the station to see off a friend.

Salma Begum then requested Mohana to show her platform ticket. When the lawyer was unable to produce a platform ticket, the ticket examiner directed her to pay the standard fine for being on the platform without authorization.

This demand triggered a verbal argument between the two women. The disagreement quickly escalated into a physical altercation on the platform. During the scuffle, ticket examiner Salma Begum sustained injuries. The disruption drew the attention of nearby passengers, creating a tense atmosphere on the suburban platforms.

Following the incident, both parties approached the Egmore Railway Police Station to file formal complaints against each other. The Government Railway Police subsequently registered cases based on the mutual complaints.

In the case registered against the lawyer, Mohana, based on the complaint filed by Salma Begum, the GRP booked her under sections related to obstructing a public servant from performing their duty and causing injury.

Conversely, the GRP also registered a case against the ticket examiner, Salma Begum, based on the counter-complaint filed by Mohana. Under this complaint, the ticket examiner faces charges of using obscene language, wrongful restraint, causing injury, and criminal intimidation.
