Three-year-old boy killed by falling iron plate in Kavangarai near Puzhal

A three-year-old boy was killed on Saturday night, July 11, 2026, when a heavy iron plate fell from an excavator crane in Kannappa Swamy Nagar, Kavangarai, near Puzhal in Chennai. The fatal accident occurred on a footpath where sewage project work was underway.
The victim was identified as three-year-old Shahrukh Easwaran. His father, Vignesh, who is employed at a private company, resides in the Kannappa Swamy Nagar area of Kavangarai. On Saturday evening, Vignesh and his young son had gone to a nearby shop to buy food.
The accident occurred as the duo was returning home on foot. While they were walking, an excavator machine was operating nearby to execute a sewage project. The crane of the excavator was lifting a huge iron plate as part of the ongoing work.
As the father and son walked along the footpath, the rope holding the heavy iron plate suddenly snapped. This caused the massive plate to fall from the crane. The falling plate struck both the father and the son.
While Vignesh was able to narrowly escape the impact without severe injury, the heavy iron plate fell directly onto the abdomen of the three-year-old child.
Shahrukh was critically injured in the accident. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Madhavaram for emergency medical treatment. However, the boy was pronounced dead upon his arrival at the hospital.
Following the incident, the Puzhal police department sent the body of the deceased child to the Government Stanley Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
A security camera in the area captured the entire sequence of the accident. The CCTV footage, which shows the moment the crane rope snapped and the plate fell, has gone viral on social media.
