The Pole Camp to Present Navarasa-Themed Pole Dance Showcase on August 16

The Chennai-based pole dancing school, The Pole Camp, is set to present its first public thematic showcase, titled 'Becoming', at the Sir Mutha Venkatasubba Rao Concert Hall in Chennai on August 16.
The production will feature 64 students performing choreographed pieces based on the navarasa, or the nine emotions, marking a transition for the school from a fitness-focused studio into an elaborate theatrical dance production.
The upcoming showcase, scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m., was choreographed over an eight-week period by the studio's founder and pole artiste, Anusha Swamy, along with her team. The performers comprise a diverse group of over 60 women and one man, ranging in age from a seven-year-old to individuals in their mid-to-late-40s. The cast includes students, doctors, entrepreneurs, artists, and corporate employees.
During recent rehearsals at the school’s East Coast Road (ECR) studio, the performers practiced fluid movements and spins on poles aligned across the floor and ceiling. Instructor Mridula Joseph and Swamy guided the students through their routines to help them prepare for the stage.
Swamy, who founded The Pole Camp nearly five years ago, initially expected pole dancing to thrive in Chennai primarily as a fitness activity. However, her background as a film choreographer and classical dancer led her to introduce choreography lessons, which transformed the practice into a performance art.
The decision to base the production on the navarasa came after Swamy experienced a mix of intense emotions following a dental surgery. She noted that the nine emotions reflect both daily life in one's 30s and the journey of learning pole dance, which involves fear, happiness, exhilaration, and courage.
Currently, The Pole Camp operates out of studios on Harrington Road and ECR, with plans for a larger studio along ECR. Swamy emphasized that the school serves as a safe space for women to build confidence in their bodies and find community without fear of judgment.
Swamy also highlighted the history of pole dancing, noting that its origins lie with strippers who first developed the form, allowing women worldwide to adapt it.
Tickets for the August 16 performance of 'Becoming' are available through the school's website.
