Techie Killed as Protruding Truck Iron Rods Pierce Car in Manapakkam
A 30-year-old software engineer from Andhra Pradesh succumbed to his injuries and two of his colleagues were severely injured early on Sunday morning when iron bars jutting out from a truck carrying construction materials for Metro Rail works pierced through their car windshield on the Adyar River Bridge in Manapakkam.
According to the police, the deceased IT professional has been identified as Malapati Ashok, aged 30. Police officials stated that Ashok was returning to Ramapuram in the early morning hours of Sunday after completing a night shift at an information technology firm located in Pallavaram.
Two other persons, both colleagues of the deceased, were travelling in the company vehicle along with Ashok when the accident occurred. The company car was being driven by his colleague, Govindaraj, who hails from Old Pallavaram. Another colleague, Sri Soumya, was also travelling with them in the vehicle at the time of the collision.
Police investigation revealed that the truck in front was transporting materials meant for Metro Rail construction works. Iron rods loaded onto the transport vehicle were sticking out nearly 10 feet outside the body of the truck.
While the vehicle was travelling on the Adyar River Bridge, the car hit the truck. Upon impact, the exposed iron rods sticking out from the rear of the truck pierced directly through the car's windshield, inflicting severe injuries on all three occupants sitting inside the company vehicle.
All three injured individuals were taken to a nearby private hospital for emergency medical care. Despite receiving medical treatment at the private hospital, Ashok succumbed to the severe injuries he suffered in the crash. The two other occupants, Govindaraj and Sri Soumya, sustained severe injuries.
Following the crash, the St Thomas Mount Traffic Investigation Wing took up the case and arrested the truck driver, identified as Sivakumar Bindu. He was taken into custody for allegedly transporting the construction materials in a dangerous manner. Police later produced the truck driver before court, where he was remanded in judicial custody.
