Teacher on Census Duty Robbed of Gold Chain at Vandalur Railway Station

A 51-year-old government schoolteacher on Census duty was robbed of her 6.5-sovereign gold chain in broad daylight on the foot overbridge of the Vandalur railway station on Saturday, August 22, 2026.

The victim, identified as Lebanal Selvi, is a resident of Pudhunagar in Mannivakkam. She works as a teacher at the Oonamancheri Panchayat Union Government Middle School and had been deployed on official Census duty in the Oonamancheri area.

According to the Tambaram police, the incident took place on Saturday evening when Selvi finished her assigned duty and was walking towards the Vandalur railway station to catch a train back home. As she was climbing the steps of the foot overbridge, an unidentified man wearing a mask, who had been tailing her, approached her and snatched the gold chain from her neck.

Selvi raised an alarm and called out for help, but the assailant managed to flee the scene swiftly. The suspect escaped by running across the railway tracks and jumping over an adjacent boundary wall before bystanders could intervene.

Video footage of the robbery later surfaced and began circulating widely on social media platforms.

The Mannivakkam police were alerted to the crime shortly after the incident. Police personnel are currently examining CCTV footage recorded in and around the Vandalur railway station premises and along the suspect's escape route to identify and trace the culprit.
