Tata Motors to acquire Italian truck maker Iveco for 3.8 billion euros

Tata Motors is planning to expand its global commercial vehicle footprint through a 3.8 billion euro acquisition of the Italian truck and bus manufacturer Iveco, with the transaction expected to close in the second quarter of FY27. Announcing the development in Chennai, the company revealed that the deal is set to bring Iveco's products to India while opening up new international markets for Tata Motors.

The acquisition is expected to yield significant sourcing efficiencies and create new product opportunities for the Indian automotive giant. As Tata Motors prepares to integrate the Italian business, it has identified three primary areas of synergy to drive value: revenue growth, operating cost savings, and capital expenditure optimization.

In 2025, Iveco demonstrated its market strength by selling approximately 140,000 vehicles globally, generating a total revenue of 13.4 billion euros. Girish Wagh, the Managing Director and CEO of Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles, explained during a media interaction that the geographic footprints and product portfolios of the two companies are highly complementary rather than overlapping.

Currently, Tata Motors has established a strong market presence across India, South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia. In contrast, Iveco maintains a significant foothold in Europe and Latin America.

Wagh noted that the pricing of most Iveco products begins where the Tata Motors product range ends. This distinct pricing boundary provides an opportunity for both manufacturers to enter each other's markets with minimal risk of product cannibalization.

Although current regulatory restrictions prevent the two companies from engaging in detailed joint planning before the transaction officially closes, Tata Motors has already outlined clear revenue synergies. Key plans include introducing Tata Motors trucks into Latin American markets by leveraging Iveco’s established distribution network, as well as launching selected Iveco products within India.
