Tasmac Revenue Crosses ₹50,000 Crore in 2025-26, State Policy Note Shows

State-run liquor retailer Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac) generated ₹50,845.84 crore in revenue during the 2025-26 financial year, marking a 5.1% increase over the previous year, according to a policy note released in Chennai by the state prohibition and excise department.

The figures represent an increase of ₹2,464.77 crore compared to the ₹48,381.07 crore recorded in 2024-25. Out of the total revenue generated in 2025-26, sales tax accounted for ₹39,010 crore, while the remaining ₹11,835.82 crore came from excise duty.

The revenue data became a point of contention in the legislative assembly after MLA Jayaraman questioned how Tasmac's earnings continued to climb despite the closure of retail outlets across the state.

Responding to the query, Minister K Vignesh defended the revenue trend and shared that Tasmac has brought in ₹17,854 crore so far in the 2026-27 financial year, even after the closure of 717 shops following a change in government.

Minister Vignesh noted that similar patterns were observed in earlier years, pointing out that Tasmac earned about ₹45,000 crore in 2023-24 when 500 outlets were closed under the previous administration. In 2025-26, the corporation generated an additional ₹5,000 crore to cross the ₹50,000-crore mark despite operating with 500 fewer shops.

Addressing the assembly, the minister stated that historical data since 2016 indicates sales have risen even as the total number of outlets decreased. He remarked that it was time to introspect whether shutting down liquor outlets effectively reduces overall sales, suggesting that legislators consider these consumption trends when proposing shop closures to curb liquor intake.
