Tamil Nadu Withdraws Order Banning Students From CJP and Leftist Protests

Chennai: The Vijay-led TVK government in Tamil Nadu has withdrawn an official order that prohibited college students across the state from participating in protests organised by youth movement CJP and leftist student organisations.
The ban had initially been communicated through a formal government letter issued by the Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Dr. P. Cynthia Selvi. Dated 17th August 2026, the communication instructed officials to enact coordinated, inter-departmental joint action to prevent students and youth from taking part in demonstrations organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) or left-wing student groups.
The letter, which was marked "This is very urgent," cited an earlier government communication dated 14th August before the decision was taken to retract the restriction.
The development comes as student demonstrations continue across the state over the death of Ansiji, a 21-year-old nursing student in Kanyakumari district. Ansiji, who hailed from Kerala, died after allegedly jumping from the third floor of the Bethlahem Nursing College building in Karungal on Friday, 14th August.
Friends and family members of the student have alleged that she was subjected to harassment by the college administration over the use of a smartphone before taking her own life. The family has also raised concerns regarding alleged lapses by the state police in probing the matter and claimed that the college authorities attempted to cover up the incident.
