Tamil Nadu Urban Unemployment Rate Rises to 6.6 Percent in June

The urban unemployment rate in Tamil Nadu, including major hubs like Chennai, rose to 6.6 percent in June 2026, up from 6.4 percent in May 2026, according to the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) data. Despite the rise in urban joblessness, the state's overall unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.5 percent, holding steady from the previous month.

The data highlighted a growing challenge for female job seekers across the state. The unemployment rate among women increased in both urban and rural sectors. In urban areas, female unemployment rose from 8.2 percent in May to 8.4 percent in June. In rural areas, female unemployment climbed to 5 percent, up from 4.7 percent in May. Consequently, the overall female unemployment rate moved up from 5.6 percent in May to 5.9 percent in June.

While urban areas faced rising joblessness, rural regions experienced a marginal improvement. The rural unemployment rate eased slightly to 5 percent in June, down from 5.1 percent in May. However, rural joblessness remains significantly higher than the 3.9 percent recorded in December 2025. Historically, the rural unemployment rate stood at 4.9 percent in June 2025, dropped to 3.9 percent in November 2025, and has been rising since.

On a year-on-year basis, the urban unemployment rate showed some improvement, declining from 7.1 percent in June 2025 to 6.6 percent in June 2026, representing a reduction of 0.5 percentage points. However, the June 2026 figure is still slightly higher than the 6.5 percent recorded in November 2025.

The PLFS report also tracked the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for individuals aged 15 years and above. The overall LFPR in Tamil Nadu remained unchanged at 54.4 percent in June 2026, matching the May figure.

Meanwhile, the urban LFPR saw a slight increase, rising to 50.1 percent in June 2026 from 49.8 percent in May. In contrast, the LFPR among urban women moderated slightly, standing at 24.8 percent in June 2026 compared to 25.2 percent in June 2025.
