Tamil Nadu Unveils AI Legal Portal and New Campus Upgrades in Perungudi

The Tamil Nadu government has announced several initiatives to modernise legal education and administration across the state, including the establishment of an artificial intelligence-powered legal database and an AI and Legal Studies Centre at the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University in Perungudi, Chennai.
The announcements were made by Energy and Law Minister Nirmal Kumar as part of the law department's demands for grants for 2026-27. Under these measures, the state will launch the Tamil Nadu Code Web Portal, an AI-enabled digital repository offering public access to state laws, ordinances, bills, gazettes, and amended legislations from a single platform.
At the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University in Chennai, an AI and Legal Studies Centre will be set up to focus on research, skill development, virtual learning, certificate courses, and legal videos. The facility aims to support around 30,000 law students across the School of Excellence in Law, government law colleges, and affiliated private institutions to prepare them for AI integration in the judiciary.
The university's Perungudi campus will also see significant infrastructural expansion, including the construction of a new hostel building capable of housing 606 women students. The facility will feature study rooms, dining areas, internet connectivity, elevators, round-the-clock security, and fire-safety arrangements. Additionally, the university will transition to an e-office system for file management and introduce automated examination systems featuring online evaluation.
Statewide measures were also detailed during the address. The government will introduce LL.M. programmes at government law colleges in Salem, Namakkal, Theni, and Karaikudi starting in the 2026-27 academic year, creating eight associate professor posts. Men's student hostels will be constructed at government law colleges in Vellore and Chengalpet, while an additional hostel will be built at the Tamil Nadu National Law University in Tiruchirappalli.
To improve campus facilities, CCTV cameras and two RO water purification systems each will be installed across 12 government law colleges, including Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College at Pattaraiperumbudur and colleges in Madurai, Coimbatore, and Tiruchirappalli, benefiting approximately 14,926 students.
