Tamil Nadu Unveils AI-Driven Schemes to Revamp Govt School Curriculum

The Tamil Nadu government announced a series of new initiatives, including artificial intelligence-driven personalized learning modules and revised curricula, aimed at overhauling the state's school education system. Announcing the demands for grants for the school education department in the assembly in Chennai, Minister A Rajmohan said the focus is on teaching methodology and student wellbeing to prepare them for the future.

Under the new plans, the state has set aside Rs 70 lakh to roll out a Personalised Adaptive Learning (PAL) scheme on a pilot basis for classes 6 to 8 students across 500 government middle schools. The system will use AI-designed assessments after every chapter to identify concepts where a student falls behind and provide tailored practice sums.

School Education Secretary B Chandramohan explained that the current system assesses students only through weekly or monthly tests, which fails to track individual understanding comprehensively. The PAL scheme will operate on a hybrid model in its first phase, combining AI assessments with teacher assistance, utilizing hi-tech labs to train students.

The department also announced the 'TN-Arivu curriculum', which will be rolled out across all schools in the state starting from the 2027-28 academic year to build analytical, logical reasoning, and entrepreneurial skills. The curriculum is divided into three tiers: 'Arivu Foundation' for classes 1 to 5, 'Arivu Discovery' for classes 6 to 8, and 'Arivu Edge' for classes 9 to 12. For higher classes, it will focus on life- and employment-oriented skills. The financial allocation for this scheme is yet to be specified.

To build competency-based problem-solving capabilities, the state introduced the Mathichudar scheme for classes 6 to 12. Implemented at a cost of Rs 18.01 crore in government schools, the program will conduct assessments and specialized classroom sessions.

Additionally, the government allocated Rs 2.72 crore to expand the TN Spark scheme, which was launched in July 2025 to teach AI and robotics. The curriculum will span foundational lessons for classes 6 to 8, intermediate training for classes 9 and 10, and elective subjects in AI, robotics, or virtual reality for classes 11 and 12, accompanied by teacher training through the State Council of Educational Research and Training.

For entrance exam preparation, Rs 22.36 crore has been earmarked under the 'Vetri Paathai' scheme to help students from 172 government higher secondary schools qualify for national-level higher education entrance tests and secure admissions to top institutions.
