Tamil Nadu to Name Tambaram Road After Martyr Major Mukund Varadarajan

The Tamil Nadu government has issued official orders to name a road in the Tambaram locality after the late Army officer and martyr Major Mukund Varadarajan. The state government's decision to rename the road, which is located within the Tambaram Municipal Corporation limits, follows a formal request submitted by the Indian Army to honor the late officer.

The road chosen to bear the name of the late Army officer is the route that connects the Tambaram railway station and Velachery. This specific area holds great local significance, as Major Varadarajan spent his early years in the Tambaram neighborhood. Though the late Major hailed from Ananthapuram, he grew up in this locality and was a student of Madras Christian College.

Major Mukund Varadarajan was martyred in April 2014 during a counter-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir. He was on deputation to the 4th Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles when he lost his life in the line of duty. Later that year, in August 2014, he was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, which is India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, for his service and sacrifice.

The renaming of this road is aimed at honoring the legacy and sacrifice of the Ashoka Chakra recipient in the very locality where he spent his early years and completed his studies.

The heroic story of Major Varadarajan’s life and military service reached a much wider audience through the Tamil film industry. His story was depicted in the movie 'Amaran,' starring Sivakarthikeyan, which was released in October 2024.
