Tamil Nadu Peak Power Demand Nears Record High of 20,976 MW Amid Dry June Weather

An extended period of dry, summer-like weather in Chennai and across Tamil Nadu drove peak electricity demand to 20,976 megawatts (MW) on Friday, coming within 400 MW of the state's all-time high record. Despite the onset of the southwest monsoon in the first week of June, a lack of rainfall has forced temperatures to rise above normal, causing a major surge in power consumption.

According to officials from the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL), the overall electricity consumption on Friday reached 456.28 million units (Mu). This figure is just 15 Mu short of the state's maximum per-day consumption record of 471.45 Mu, which was set during the peak of summer on April 29 this year. The state's all-time high peak power demand of 21,307 MW was also recorded on that same day in April.

The dry weather conditions prevailed across most of Tamil Nadu on Friday, pushing temperatures well above the normal range in several districts. Madurai recorded the highest temperature in the state, topping the list at 39°C. Tiruttani followed closely behind, while Chennai also experienced hotter than usual conditions, with the temperature peaking at 38°C.

TNPDCL officials noted a sharp increase in power demand over the course of the week compared to the preceding days. While the peak demand hovered around 19,500 MW in the previous week, the average peak demand rose to approximately 20,400 MW this week.

This year's June demand is significantly higher than the electricity demand recorded during the same period in previous years. In comparison, the peak power demand was around 18,000 MW in June last year. The peak demand was another 1,000 MW less during the same week in the year prior.

The extended dry spell and lack of rainfall have effectively pushed the state's electricity infrastructure back to near-peak summer levels, even after the official arrival of the southwest monsoon earlier in the month.
