Tamil Nadu freezes electricity tariffs despite Rs 2.47 lakh crore power debt

On Thursday, Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister Nirmal Kumar announced in Chennai that electricity tariffs across the state will remain unchanged for the rest of the year. The announcement was made during the official release of a power sector white paper, which revealed that the state's electricity department is currently burdened with a massive debt of Rs. 2,47,130 crore.
The decision to maintain current tariff rates is expected to provide significant financial relief to millions of electricity consumers across Tamil Nadu. This group includes domestic households, agricultural users, and small and medium enterprises that rely heavily on stable power pricing to manage their daily operational costs. The minister's declaration directly addresses widespread anticipation among the public regarding a potential tariff revision, which many had expected due to rising power procurement costs.
The TVK government has faced ongoing controversy regarding recurrent power cuts, an issue that has plagued the administration since it came into power earlier this year. In response to criticism from opposition parties over these power disruptions, Minister Nirmal Kumar had previously promised that a white paper explaining the actual condition of Tamil Nadu's heavily indebted electricity sector would be released within two days.
According to the newly released white paper, the electricity department's debt has reached Rs. 2,47,130 crore. Despite this severe financial strain, the minister highlighted several key statistics and future plans for the sector. He stated that the government had successfully provided employment opportunities to 343 people over the past five years.
To improve the state's power distribution network and address infrastructure needs, the government has outlined plans to procure 1.5 lakh transformers over the next four years. Furthermore, Minister Nirmal Kumar added that approvals for solar energy projects in the state were granted with complete transparency.
