Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Inspects Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Friday inspected the Puzhal Central Prison complex in Chennai and directed prison authorities to provide inmates with opportunities for rehabilitation, education, and vocational training.

Accompanied by senior prison officials, the Chief Minister inspected all three major sections of the Puzhal facility, which house undertrial prisoners, convicted individuals, and women prisoners. During the inspection, he inquired about the living conditions of the inmates and reviewed the various facilities available across both male and female wards.

Vijay carried out checks on the food served to prisoners, the condition of the kitchens, clothing storage areas, and medical infrastructure. Emphasising the importance of reading, he instructed prison administrators to ensure that inmates have access to an adequate collection of books within the facility.

During his interaction with the prison officials, Vijay noted that many prisoners end up in correctional facilities due to the difficult circumstances they faced. He drew a distinction between deliberate wrongdoing and unintentional mistakes, advising officials to focus on creating pathways for inmates to reform.

To aid in their rehabilitation, the Chief Minister asked the authorities to organize vocational training, educational courses, and other constructive activities tailored to the interests of the inmates.
