Tamil Nadu Assembly Witnesses Ruckus Over Decision to Provide Cars to MLAs

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in Chennai witnessed heated exchanges on Friday after the TVK government's decision to provide cars to MLAs was brought up once again during the proceedings.

The debate began during the discussion on the grants for the Housing department, when DMK member Markandeyan raised the car allocation scheme several days after its initial announcement. The initiative was planned to provide cars to MLAs to facilitate their travel and work within their respective constituencies.

Responding to the DMK raising the topic, Law Minister C T R Nirmal Kumar expressed dissatisfaction over the issue being brought up repeatedly and urged members not to stir the matter again. Speaker J C D Prabhakar also intervened during the session, urging the members of the House not to continuously rake up the controversy surrounding the vehicles for MLAs.

Defending the government's initiative, Minister Arun Raj stated that the car scheme was designed to help MLAs better understand and address the specific problems faced by the people in their constituencies.

During the heated debate, Leader of the House K A Sengottaiyan raised a counter-question in the Assembly, asking who had spent Rs 24 crore on a car race in Chennai at a time when the State was facing a financial crisis. In response to the query, DMK member K N Nehru stated that the expenditure on the car race was incurred during Udhayanidhi's tenure as the Sports Minister.
