Tamil Nadu Adds 100 MBBS Seats in Namakkal and Tiruppur Government Colleges

The National Medical Commission has approved a 100-seat increase in the MBBS intake across two government medical colleges in Namakkal and Tiruppur. This development marks the first expansion of government medical college seats in Tamil Nadu in five years. The approval will raise the individual capacities of both institutions from 100 seats to 150 seats, with the changes set to take effect starting from the 2026-27 academic year.
On July 10, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board officially issued letters of permission for both colleges under the National Medical Commission Act of 2019. The two institutions, Government Medical College and Hospital in Namakkal and Government Medical College and Hospital in Tiruppur, are both affiliated with The Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University.
With this expansion, the total MBBS seat count across the 36 government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu will rise to 5,150. State health officials highlighted that this is the first time the government seat count has grown since 2021. Near the end of the previous AIADMK government's term in 2021, the state had opened 11 new medical colleges. However, neither the number of colleges nor their seat counts had seen any growth since that period.
In addition to the newly approved seats in Namakkal and Tiruppur, state health officials stated that they are also anticipating a similar approval for 50 additional MBBS seats at a government medical college located in Tiruvallur.
State health officials welcomed the decision, noting the positive impact it will have on medical education in the region. An official explained that an increase in government medical seats means better clinical material, higher teaching standards, and lower fees for meritorious students who are seeking admission.
