Sriperumbudur Drives Tamil Nadu to 20 Billion Dollars in FY26 Electronics Exports

The industrial corridor of Sriperumbudur in Kancheepuram district has driven Tamil Nadu to become India's largest electronics exporter in FY26. The state recorded outbound shipments worth $20 billion, representing approximately 42 percent of the nation's total electronics exports. Kancheepuram district alone contributed nearly $17 billion of this total, cementing the region's transition from an automotive township into a premier global electronics manufacturing hub.
The state's export figure of $20 billion represents a robust 36 percent growth over the previous fiscal year of FY25. This surge mirrors the decades-long evolution of the local manufacturing industry.
The foundations of the Sriperumbudur-Oragadam industrial corridor were laid in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Originally known primarily for its automobile and component factories, the corridor created the infrastructure necessary to attract multinational electronics manufacturers.
Over the years, major global brands established their manufacturing bases in the region. Nokia set up one of the world's largest handset factories in the corridor. Other multinational giants, including Motorola, Dell, Samsung, Foxconn, Flex, Ericsson, and Salcomp, also established local facilities alongside hundreds of component suppliers and ancillary units.
Samsung, which set up its manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur in 2007, now produces televisions, refrigerators, and washing machines for both domestic and international markets.
This concentration of manufacturers created a network effect, generating high demand for local tooling companies, packaging firms, testing facilities, and logistics providers. The electronics boom has also shifted local demographics by creating significant employment opportunities for women, who now make up a substantial share of the workforce on electronics manufacturing shop floors.
While recent central government initiatives such as Make in India and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme have accelerated investments, the state's long-term policy continuity laid the groundwork. Tamil Nadu is now utilizing this ecosystem to move into higher-value activities like product design, research and development, and advanced electronics. The state's Semiconductor and Advanced Electronics Policy 2024 is expected to further drive the development of local semiconductor packaging capabilities.
