Southern Railway Reviews Ambattur Subway Work as Waterlogging Causes Delay

Senior officials of the Southern Railway Chennai division reviewed the construction status of the limited-use subway near Ambattur railway station on Thursday. Following the inspection, officials stated that the railway administration's portion of the project is nearing completion.
According to senior railway officials, the remaining railway work is limited to the provision of footpaths inside the subway and a ramp connecting the facility to platforms 2 and 3. However, continuous waterlogging inside the subway has prevented workers from completing these remaining tasks.
To resolve the issue, the railway administration has engaged with the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). Officials requested the civic body to drain the stagnant water accumulated on the approach road leading to the subway so the pending construction can resume and conclude.
Southern Railway noted that the GCC is coordinating on the subway construction, while emphasising that passenger safety remains its highest priority.
The review came amid concerns over safety, as commuters have been seen walking across the railway tracks due to delays in opening the subway. The railway administration urged all passengers to refrain from crossing the tracks and advised them to use designated foot overbridges, subways, and other authorised crossing facilities.
