Southern Railway completes Rs 97-crore remodelling of Arakkonam Junction yard

Southern Railway has commissioned the Rs 97-crore Arakkonam Yard Remodelling Project at Arakkonam Junction on the busy Chennai–Arakkonam corridor. This major infrastructure upgrade is expected to directly benefit daily suburban rail commuters who use this corridor by ensuring more punctual train services and fewer delays at one of the network's busiest junctions.

According to an official release from Southern Railway, the completion of the project has successfully eliminated a long-standing operational bottleneck. The Rs 97-crore remodelling project has transformed Arakkonam Junction into a high-capacity, technology-driven railway hub. It achieves this by providing seamless connectivity between the Chennai–Arakkonam third and fourth fast lines and the local yard.

The railway administration stated that the project segregates suburban, main line, and Renigunta train operations into dedicated operational grids. This segregation of services enables conflict-free train movements across the junction. In addition to improving daily punctuality, the new system enhances safety and creates additional capacity to accommodate future passenger and freight traffic.

In its official statement, Southern Railway noted that the project substantially reduces the detention of suburban trains. This improvement is expected to boost the reliability of both passenger and freight operations along the route.

Another key benefit of the yard remodelling is the complete removal of a permanent 45 kmph speed restriction on the up line. By removing this speed limit, both passenger and freight trains are now permitted to operate at higher permissible sectional speeds, thereby improving the overall efficiency of the railway network.

The physical execution of the remodelling involved extensive work on the tracks. Engineering teams successfully removed 54 existing points, which included a diamond crossing, and installed 58 new points to establish the new operational layout at the junction.
