Sewage Mixes with Rainwater and Overflows on GST Road in Chromepet

Motorists and residents faced severe hardship after sewage mixed with rainwater and overflowed onto Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road in Chromepet on Friday evening. The overflow followed approximately 30 minutes of moderate rainfall across Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram, and surrounding areas.
The inundated condition was particularly severe along the stretch near the junction of GST Road and Kamarajar Nagar–Rathinam Road. Schoolchildren, pedestrians, and two-wheeler riders struggled to navigate the flooded roadway as foul-smelling water covered the surface.
Residents reported that the overflowing contaminated water entered several houses situated in low-lying areas, despite the rainfall being only moderate in intensity.
According to local residents, some apartment complexes and industrial establishments in the vicinity allegedly release untreated sewage into the stormwater drains whenever it rains. This practice causes sewage to mix directly with rainwater runoff, which quickly overwhelms the drainage network and spills onto public roads.
The resulting accumulation of stagnant, foul-smelling sewage water on road stretches has created persistent sanitation and health concerns for nearby neighbourhoods, in addition to entering residential premises.
Residents stated that they had submitted multiple complaints to the Tambaram City Municipal Corporation regarding the illegal discharge of sewage into the stormwater drain network. However, they noted that no effective action had been taken by authorities to curb the violations.
Demanding an immediate solution, residents urged the Tambaram civic body to inspect the area, identify the violators responsible for releasing sewage into the drains, take strict action against them, and ensure the stormwater drainage infrastructure is utilized strictly for carrying rainwater.
