Seven injured in LPG cylinder blast during house fire in Thathanur near Sriperumbudur

Seven people suffered burn injuries after LPG cylinders exploded during a house fire in Thathanur, near Sriperumbudur, in the early hours of Tuesday, June 16, 2026. The incident occurred as local residents rushed to help extinguish the blaze before emergency services arrived at the scene.
According to the police, the house belongs to Murugan, who lives with his wife Nandhini and their two daughters. The family had recently added a first-floor extension to their house in the Kancheepuram district neighbourhood.
The fire reportedly broke out while electrical wiring work was being carried out in the newly built portion of the building. The flames quickly spread throughout the structure, eventually reaching the ground floor.
Murugan and his family managed to evacuate the house safely. They immediately informed the Oragadam police and personnel at the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services station in Sriperumbudur.
By the time the firefighters arrived, the blaze had engulfed the entire house. The fire also gutted a two-wheeler that was parked on the premises.
Neighbours rushed to assist the family and tried to put out the flames. However, LPG cylinders kept inside the house exploded during the rescue attempt. Seven persons who were trying to help extinguish the fire were injured in the blast.
Firefighters who arrived at the scene later succeeded in completely dousing the fire.
The seven injured individuals were immediately taken to nearby hospitals. Two of the injured were admitted to the Government Hospital in Sriperumbudur, while the remaining five victims were taken to private hospitals. Medical sources stated that most of the injured individuals suffered burn injuries covering nearly 25 percent of their bodies.
The Oragadam police have registered a case regarding the incident. Officers are currently investigating the circumstances that led to the outbreak of the fire and the subsequent cylinder explosions.
