Seasonal Influenza Under Control in Tamil Nadu, Health Department Assures

The Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine is closely monitoring seasonal influenza across Tamil Nadu, assuring the public that the situation remains under control during the current monsoon season.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the Health Department advised citizens not to panic regarding H1N1 and seasonal influenza cases. Officials noted that year-round surveillance of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) is actively carried out across the state.
The ILI and SARI situation is regularly reviewed by District Health Officers and Rapid Response Teams to detect any unusual rise in infections or cluster formations. If an increase is identified, immediate intervention is initiated. The department also stated that stocks of essential medical supplies and the antiviral drug Oseltamivir are being continuously monitored across government healthcare facilities.
Patients arriving at government hospitals and primary health centres with fever and respiratory complaints are being examined and treated promptly. Oseltamivir is administered based on medical advice to those who require it.
Health authorities are paying special attention to vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, young children, the elderly, and individuals with co-morbidities such as diabetes, cardiac ailments, and chronic respiratory conditions. Patients exhibiting severe symptoms are being provided antiviral treatment on medical recommendation without waiting for laboratory test results.
Emphasising that seasonal influenza is a treatable condition, the department urged the public to seek early medical attention at the nearest primary health centre if they develop fever, cough, or throat pain. Officials cautioned against self-medication without consulting a doctor.
Precautionary measures recommended by the department include regular handwashing and following respiratory hygiene while sneezing or coughing. The department noted that wearing masks is generally not necessary.
