School Teacher Robbed of Gold Chain on Foot Overbridge Near Vandalur

A 49-year-old government school teacher returning home after completing census duty was robbed of her gold chain after an unidentified man pushed her down the steps of a foot overbridge near Vandalur railway station on Saturday evening.

The victim, identified as Selvi, is a resident of Mannivakkam who works at a government school in Oonamancheri. Although Saturday was a holiday, she had been deputed to Oonamancheri to carry out census-related work. After completing her assigned duties for the day, Selvi boarded a bus to Vandalur.

Around 5.30 pm, she started walking along GST Road toward Mannivakkam. As she was descending the steps of the foot overbridge situated near Vandalur railway station, a suspect who had allegedly been following her pushed her down the stairway. The man then snatched her seven-sovereign gold thali chain directly from her neck before fleeing across the railway tracks.

During the struggle and the snatching attempt, the two-sovereign pendant attached to the chain broke loose and fell to the ground. The pendant was subsequently recovered at the spot, while the assailant escaped with the remaining five sovereigns of the gold chain. Selvi sustained minor injuries from the fall.

Following the incident, Selvi approached the authorities to report the crime. Based on her formal complaint, the Otteri police registered a case and initiated an investigation.

Police personnel have begun scanning through CCTV camera footage recorded across the surrounding area to identify the perpetrator and determine the path he took while escaping. A senior police officer stated that investigators are also checking video feeds from nearby roads and other surrounding locations to track the suspect's movements following the robbery.
