Sapiens Health Foundation Welcomes Tamil Nadu Assembly Salt Reduction Move
The Sapiens Health Foundation has welcomed the Tamil Nadu government's announcement of a statewide salt reduction campaign, which was unveiled in the state Assembly on Tuesday. The initiative aims to improve population health by curbing excessive salt consumption and lowering the widespread burden of hypertension, stroke, heart attacks, and kidney disease.
In a press release issued following the Assembly announcement, the foundation highlighted international precedents, citing the United Kingdom's salt reduction campaign initiated in 2005 by Graham MacGregor of the World Action on Salt, Sugar and Health (WASSH). That initiative successfully led to a reported 30 percent reduction in the salt content of bread.
The Sapiens Health Foundation has been actively advocating for lower salt consumption across the region for more than a decade. Its awareness campaign began in 2010 with a public walkathon at Marina Beach, which was followed by outreach events in Tiruchi and Puducherry, as well as educational programmes conducted across colleges. In 2014, the foundation's founder-chairman, Rajan Ravichandran, received the Notable Achievement Award from the World Hypertension League for leading the campaign.
As part of its ongoing advocacy, the foundation has engaged directly with the food processing industry, writing to more than 300 food manufacturers to urge reductions in dietary sodium levels. It noted that companies including Nestlé and Hindustan Lever had responded by lowering salt levels in packaged noodles. Academic collaboration has also formed a core part of its efforts, with the foundation organising international conferences on salt and health alongside IIT-Madras and IIT-Bombay in 2017.
In addition to consumer and industry outreach, the organisation has conducted specialised salt and health training workshops for more than 500 physicians across Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, and Vijayawada. The foundation also voiced strong support for the increasing focus on front-of-pack food labelling, stating that the Tamil Nadu government's formal move to drive the campaign forward marks a crucial step toward safeguarding public health.
