Salem Women Launch Eco-Friendly Sanitary Napkin Startup Using Cassava and Herbs

A group of women based in Thathampatty in Salem district has launched a new startup to manufacture eco-friendly sanitary napkins, providing a natural alternative to conventional plastic-based menstrual products.
The venture is spearheaded by entrepreneur Saranya Gopinath, who developed the initiative following personal struggles with skin irritation and rashes caused by commercial pads. To address the issue, she began experimenting with hand-stitched cotton prototypes at home. After receiving encouraging feedback on the initial designs, she formalised the project into a commercial business venture.
The production process uses entirely natural raw materials, avoiding synthetic components. The primary ingredients include cassava flour, malai vembu (Melia dubia), and various medicinal herbs designed to prevent adverse skin reactions.
According to business growth partner S Tharageshwari, the combination of cassava and malai vembu provides a significantly higher level of absorption compared to traditional materials, ensuring the surface stays dry for extended periods. She explained that avoiding the moisture buildup typically associated with plastic products helps control the environment where bacteria grow, effectively eliminating itching and rashes.
In addition to manufacturing and marketing the eco-friendly pads, the group aims to address the social stigma surrounding menstruation by encouraging open discussions within the local community.
