Police shoot history-sheeter in leg after he stabs constable in Mannivakkam
An A-plus category history-sheeter was shot in the right leg by a police sub-inspector after he allegedly attacked and stabbed a head constable while attempting to escape arrest near a vacant plot at Mannivakkam in Tambaram on Saturday night.
The incident occurred around 11 pm during a targeted search operation conducted by the Tambaram City Police. The operation was initiated following intelligence inputs regarding the movement of contraband in the area.
The special police team was acting under the direct instructions of Tambaram City Police Commissioner Prem Anand Sinha. During their surveillance, the team intercepted two individuals riding a motorcycle near a vacant plot in the Mannivakkam locality.
Upon searching the suspects, police officers discovered 21.6 kg of ganja in their possession. The police immediately seized the contraband along with the motorcycle used by the duo.
The primary accused was identified as 29-year-old Selvakumar, also known as Chella. According to the police, Selvakumar is a resident of Otteri Extension and is classified as an A-plus category history-sheeter, with 23 criminal cases pending against him.
His associate, who was also apprehended at the scene, was identified as 33-year-old Kanagu, alias Kanakaraj. Kanakaraj, a resident of Kilambakkam, is also registered as an A-plus category history-sheeter.
The confrontation escalated while the special team was escorting the two apprehended suspects to the police station. In an attempt to flee from custody, Selvakumar allegedly drew a knife and attacked head constable Anandaraj, inflicting injuries to his left hand.
To control the situation and prevent the suspect from escaping, sub-inspector Sathishkumar of the Otteri police station opened fire. The bullet struck Selvakumar in his right leg, successfully subduing him.
Following the shooting and the attack on the head constable, both Selvakumar and his associate Kanakaraj were formally arrested by the Tambaram City Police.
