The police seized 24 kg of ganja from a 34-year-old man at a private travel agency near Nesapakkam Junction in Koyambedu on Wednesday afternoon.
The suspect, identified as Kamrul Daktar, 34, hailing from Murshidabad district in West Bengal, was detained after employees at the travel agency noticed a sack he was carrying and alerted law enforcement officials.
The incident took place around 3.40 p.m. on Wednesday at Akash Travels, located on 100 Feet Road at Nesapakkam Junction. Daktar had entered the agency to book a bus ticket to Ernakulam.
According to the police, Daktar had travelled from Berhampur near Odisha to Chennai by bus. After arriving in the city, he took autorickshaws to travel to Madhavaram and then to Koyambedu before visiting the private travel agency.
While he was at the agency, staff members grew suspicious of the sack in his possession, suspecting that it might contain contraband. They immediately informed the police about the suspicious luggage.
Upon receiving the alert, police personnel arrived at the scene and conducted a thorough search of the sack. During the inspection, officers uncovered eight boxes wrapped in plastic tape. The boxes were found to contain ganja weighing approximately 24 kg, which was subsequently seized by the police.
