PMK Neutrality in Bypolls Fuels Speculation of Alliance With TVK

The Pattali Makkal Katchi has announced its neutrality in the upcoming by-elections to the Madurantakam and Dharapuram constituencies, triggering intense speculation over a realignment in Tamil Nadu politics and a potential entry into the TVK-led government. PMK leaders reportedly spurned attempts by the AIADMK to hold discussions after the announcement, signaling a likely permanent rift between the two former partners.
The PMK, which won four Assembly seats as an AIADMK ally in the May general elections, now finds itself at a crossroads. Political circles have been rife with speculation that the party could formally join the TVK's governing coalition—recently christened the Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance—with PMK Assembly leader Sowmiya Anbumani tipped to become a minister in the Cabinet.
Any induction of the PMK poses immediate complications for the existing alliance, particularly regarding the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, which currently holds one ministerial berth. On Thursday, VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan sought to quell the controversy, asserting that the alliance rumours were being spread deliberately. VCK representative in the Cabinet Vanni Arasu reaffirmed his party's firm stance that it would not remain part of any coalition that includes the PMK or the BJP.
For its part, the TVK leadership has maintained silence and is reportedly waiting for the results of the two by-elections before deciding its course. The ruling coalition is contending with growing friction from the Left, as both Communist parties have voiced open criticism against the government. The CPM state secretary recently accused the TVK of lacking transparency, signaling widening discontent.
The Communist parties have taken firm positions against several state decisions, including the construction of the Secretariat built in Foreshore Estate. With the VCK stating that its own moves will align with those of the CPI and CPM, the TVK may look to rope in the PMK if the Left parties decide to pull back their support. While PMK cadre have welcomed the prospect of Anbumani entering the ministry, the final political equation hinges on the outcome of the by-elections.
