P. Chidambaram Meets Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at Chennai Secretariat

P. Chidambaram Meets Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at Chennai Secretariat

Former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram met with Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at the secretariat in Chennai on Tuesday. The meeting, which lasted for approximately 20 minutes, marks the first time the senior Congress leader has met with Vijay since he assumed the role of Chief Minister of the state.

A senior Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) functionary, who is close to Chidambaram, confirmed the details of the meeting and described it as a courtesy visit. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the senior party official emphasized that the interaction carried no deeper political agenda.

“It was Chidambaram’s first meeting with Vijay after he became the chief minister. It was entirely a courtesy meeting,” the anonymous senior functionary stated.

According to an unnamed Congress leader, Chief Minister Vijay had initially wanted to meet with Chidambaram shortly after taking office as Chief Minister. Because the meeting could not be arranged at that time, Chidambaram called on him at the secretariat on Tuesday instead.

The 20-minute discussion occurred against the backdrop of the upcoming election for the single Rajya Sabha seat in Tamil Nadu. Despite the timing of the meeting, Congress leaders have explicitly stated that the talk between the former Union Minister and the Chief Minister had nothing to do with the Rajya Sabha elections.

Chidambaram has been a key figure in navigating the state's political alliances. He previously played a crucial role in ensuring that the Congress party maintained its ties with the DMK. This decision came during a period when a segment of Congress leadership expressed a desire to break away from the DMK alliance in order to partner with Vijay’s political party, the TVK.

The brief courtesy meeting at the secretariat highlights the ongoing interactions between veteran national leaders and the state's current administration.
