Over 250 Specialists Gather in Chennai for Sports Injury Conclave

Over 250 orthopaedic surgeons, sports medicine specialists, and healthcare professionals gathered in Chennai on Sunday, June 14, 2026, for the 2nd Annual Congress WOC India – Chennai Sports Injury Conclave 2026. The academic event, organized by the India Chapter of the World Orthopaedic Concern (WOC) in association with Apollo Hospitals, was held to discuss the latest advancements in sports injury care, prevention, and rehabilitation.

During the conclave, medical experts participated in scientific sessions, panel discussions, and interactive workshops. The event aimed to promote knowledge sharing on advanced medical techniques and treatment standards, addressing the growing needs of active individuals and athletes.

Speaking at a press conference, Organising Chairman Navaladi Shankar, who serves as a Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, pointed out that a significant number of sports injuries occur due to inadequate training, improper techniques, and overuse. Dr. Shankar stressed the critical need for wider awareness on injury prevention and management, especially as more people take up various fitness activities.

The scientific programme was led by a panel of 35 distinguished national and international faculty members who shared insights on emerging innovations in sports medicine.

Arindam Banerjee, the president of WOC International and WOC India, highlighted the organization’s global mission. He explained that the WOC serves as a bridge between countries that possess advanced orthopaedic resources and those that lack adequate healthcare infrastructure. Banerjee noted that while India previously benefited from the WOC's support, the country has now become a net contributor to the global orthopaedic community.

Other prominent medical professionals in attendance included S. Saseendar, vice-president of WOC India; Samundeeswari S., joint secretary of WOC India; and Alberto Gregori, a consultant orthopedic surgeon from the United Kingdom.

Looking to the future, doctors at the conclave stated that WOC India plans to focus on treating and managing injuries resulting from native sports, such as kabaddi and kalaripayattu.
