Opposition Opposes Purported TVK Government Move to Allow Resto-Bars

On Friday, major opposition parties in Chennai strongly opposed a purported move by the TVK government to permit resto-bars and introduce 54 new liquor brands across Tamil Nadu. Leaders from the AIADMK, PMK, and BJP voiced their strong objections to the rumored plans, while the state government, led by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, clarified that no official decision has been made on the matter.

The controversy arose following reports that the state administration was planning to expand liquor sales. Former AIADMK minister R B Udhayakumar released a video message addressing the situation. In his message, Udhayakumar alleged that information is spreading that the TVK government is planning to grant permission to open resto-bars across the state. He noted that these new establishments would be in addition to the existing 4,000-plus Tasmac outlets currently operating in Tamil Nadu.

Furthermore, Udhayakumar claimed that the government is planning to introduce 54 new brands of liquor. He alleged that this move is aimed at satisfying alcoholics and promoting drinking habits among the public.

PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss also strongly condemned the purported plans. Ramadoss warned that his party would launch statewide protests if the government went ahead with its proposed plan to introduce the new liquor brands and permit resto-bars.

BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran criticized the government's approach, calling it a "double standard." Nagenthran stated that it was ironic for Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay to boast about closing down Tasmac outlets while his administration simultaneously contemplated permitting resto-bars and launching new liquor brands. Nagenthran insisted that the state government should completely drop the idea of allowing new bars and liquor brands.

In response to the mounting criticism from the opposition parties, the state government issued a clarification on Friday, stating that it was yet to take any decision on the matter.
