Nolambur police shoot murder suspect Rupesh in knee during arrest after fatal clash

The Nolambur police shot a 23-year-old murder suspect in the knee in self-defense after he allegedly attacked a police team and attempted to escape during his arrest in Nolambur, Chennai. The shooting occurred during a police operation following the murder of a local youth on Friday night.
The prime suspect, identified as Rupesh of Maduravoyal, was shot and injured during the arrest. Police officials stated that the team acted in self-defense when Rupesh turned violent. He was successfully apprehended alongside six other suspects within a few hours of the initial crime.
The police identified the other arrested suspects as Udayaraj, aged 21, Karthik Raja, aged 28, Rakesh Raja, aged 26, Naveen Kumar, aged 24, Meshak, aged 22, and Suryaprakash, aged 27.
According to investigators, the conflict began as a dispute over filling water from a tanker lorry on Union Road at Chinna Nolambur on Friday night. Two brothers, Sanjay, aged 23, and Sarath, aged 27, allegedly assaulted an individual named Udhaya during the confrontation.
Shortly after the initial clash, Udayaraj allegedly returned to the scene with his brothers, Rakesh Raja and Karthik Raja, and a group of associates. The group allegedly barged into the home of Sanjay and Sarath, launching an attack on them with knives. The brothers' father, Murugadas, attempted to intervene to protect his sons but was also stabbed during the altercation.
All three victims were rushed to KMC Hospital. Sanjay succumbed to his knife wounds on the way to the medical facility. Sarath and Murugadas survived the assault and are currently undergoing medical treatment at the hospital.
Following the incident, Murugadas's wife, Selvi, lodged a formal complaint with the local authorities. The Nolambur police registered a case under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for murder and attempt to murder, which led to the swift mobilization of the police team and the subsequent arrests.
