New Astroturf in R.S. Puram Boosts Hockey Talent Across Western Tamil Nadu
The high-grade synthetic hockey turf established at R.S. Puram in Coimbatore earlier this year has spurred modern hockey development and participation across western Tamil Nadu, sports officials said. The facility is the first of its kind in the western region of the state.
Dr. P. Senthil Rajkumar, secretary of the Coimbatore District Hockey Association and general secretary of the Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu, stated that the turf has elicited significant interest among budding and existing hockey players in Coimbatore and neighbouring districts. Modern hockey relies heavily on synthetic turf to match international standards and test players' endurance, stamina, and skills.
In recent months, the association conducted several hockey leagues and tournaments for schools, colleges, and clubs at the venue. The primary highlight among these events was the Hockey India Men Junior National Championship tournament, which took place in July and August. In addition to competitive matches, the association also conducted specialized training camps for coaches and umpires.
Dr. Senthil Rajkumar noted that the absence of modern synthetic turf had previously dampened interest among young athletes. With the international-standard ground now operational, school and college students have shown renewed enthusiasm for the sport, positioning Coimbatore to develop into a prominent hockey hub for the western zone.
Schools, colleges, and clubs from neighbouring districts, including the Nilgiris, Erode, and Namakkal, have also made inquiries to train at the R.S. Puram facility. Yesteryear hockey talents from the Coimbatore zone have visited the ground to exchange views and support ongoing developmental efforts.
The association has sought necessary approvals and support to conduct Khelo India hockey programmes in Coimbatore. Officials are also looking for schemes to erect a spectator gallery and construct additional infrastructure to support the sports atmosphere at the ground.
