Muthiah Street Blocked by Haphazard Parking and Shop Waste in Vellala Teynampet

Haphazard vehicle parking and the dumping of grey water and rotten vegetables by local shops have blocked Muthiah Street in Vellala Teynampet, near Stella Maris College and behind the DMS Metro station. The ongoing civic issue has severely hampered pedestrian and vehicular movement during rush hours and early morning hours, sparking concerns among local residents, commuters, and students who rely on this key link road.
The street serves as a vital access route to the DMS Metro station. During rush hours, this street bustles with a never-ending parade of pedestrians and motorists. However, their movement is heavily restricted by haphazardly parked vehicles, which largely belong to visitors of four specific shops operating on Muthiah Street.
In addition to the parking issues, offscourings left behind on the road by these shops add to the daily impediment. A local resident, speaking on the condition of anonymity, noted that in the early morning hours, this situation causes a highly noticeable disturbance to college students and morning walkers who use the stretch.
Specifically, grey water and rotten vegetables from a fast food shop and a vegetable shop make their way onto the road surface, creating unhygienic conditions. The resident pointed out that the haphazard parking is essentially the direct result of visitors frequenting these four shops.
Repeated pleas have been made to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to get these shops to clean up their act. Residents have requested the civic body to ensure that the parking of visitors' vehicles is properly regulated and that the shop discards are disposed of carefully. However, these appeals have not yet yielded any helpful results, the resident rued.
Given its significant location behind the DMS Metro station, residents emphasize that the rules of the road must be adhered to more conscientiously because of the severe impact it has on pedestrian and vehicular movement when the street "malfunctions."
The road is a critical pathway for several major institutions in the area. Besides the students of Stella Maris College, the main constituents who use this road from the DMS Metro station include students of Amethi College and Balaji Matriculation Higher Secondary School. Residents of the nearby police quarters and a considerable number of commuters heading to offices and commercial establishments on Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai also depend on this link road daily.
