MK Stalin Hints at Assembly Return After Verbal Clash With Chief Minister Joseph Vijay

CHENNAI — Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president and former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has hinted at a political comeback to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly through upcoming by-elections, following a sharp verbal exchange with Chief Minister Joseph Vijay. The development comes after Stalin lost his seat in the Kolathur constituency in Chennai to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) during the 2026 Assembly elections.

The political debate gained momentum after Chief Minister Vijay, during proceedings in the Assembly, took a swipe at the DMK by asking, "Where is your father?" The question was a direct reference to Stalin's absence from the House following his electoral defeat.

Stalin responded to the Chief Minister's remarks by asserting that his connection with the public remains stronger than any legislative post. "Don't search for me in the Assembly, look for me in the people's hearts," Stalin said, stressing that public support is the true measure of political relevance.

Despite Stalin's remarks, senior DMK leaders have indicated that the former Chief Minister could make a comeback to the legislature very soon. Speaking at a public meeting, senior DMK leader and MLA K.N. Nehru hinted at Stalin's imminent return through forthcoming by-elections.

"He asked our leader, where is your father? He would come. Very soon, he would come in. That's all we can say now. He would return and take responsibility again. That's for sure," Nehru said. He noted that while party cadres had been quiet, the exchange has energized DMK members across Tamil Nadu to push for Stalin's return.

Since Stalin's defeat in Kolathur, his son, Udhayanidhi Stalin, has been serving as the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly.

The rivalry between the DMK and TVK escalated further after Udhayanidhi Stalin posted a message on X referencing a wife searching for her husband at the Chengalpattu court. Political observers and social media users criticized the post, which was widely interpreted as an indirect reference to a divorce plea allegedly involving Vijay's wife, Sangeetha, arguing that personal matters should not be brought into political disputes.
