MDMK Snaps Nine Year Alliance With DMK Led Coalition At Chennai Meeting

On Saturday, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) officially ended its nine-year-old political alliance with the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance during its 32nd general council meeting in Chennai. The party resolved to remain independent of any coalition until the next election, while publicly accusing the DMK of ill-treatment.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, MDMK General Secretary Vaiko stated that his party had been mistreated by the DMK. He highlighted that MDMK candidates were even forced to contest the Assembly elections under the DMK's own symbol.

The MDMK also accused the DMK of making behind-the-scenes efforts to help the AIADMK rise to power, despite the AIADMK having forged an election tie-up with communal Hindutva forces and winning only 47 seats.

During the general council meeting, the MDMK passed 23 resolutions. One key resolution congratulated and praised the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government and Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay for their success in the elections.

The party urged the TVK administration to uphold the uniqueness of Tamil Nadu by adhering to principles of secularism, social justice, egalitarianism, State rights, and the welfare of Tamils without compromise.

The MDMK welcomed several decisions of the TVK government, including its commitment to the two-language system in State schools and the closure of 717 liquor shops. The party urged the government to fight for withheld Union Government educational funds and to revoke bar licenses issued during the previous administration.

Additionally, the general council raised concerns over unemployment, urging the TVK government to fill more than 12 lakh vacant jobs in the state. On the Cauvery River issue, the MDMK opposed Karnataka's bid to construct a dam at Mekedatu, reiterating that Tamil Nadu's consistent stand is that the dam should not be built at all.
